Die erste Veröffentlichung der Band Klang Abstrakt war die Maxi "Memories", die im April 1999 erschien. Sie beinhaltete die drei Songs "Memories (drumatic)", "Memories (romantic)" und "The journey", wobei "Memories (romantic)" die ohne Drums unterlegte Originalversion ist und auch auf dem anschließend veröffentlichten Album "Beam" als Bonustrack enthalten ist. Der dritte Titel "The journey" ist exklusiv nur auf dieser Maxi zu finden.

Die Maxi erschien noch unter dem Bandnamen Klangwerk, der, um namensrechtlichen Schwierigkeiten schon im Vorfeld aus dem Weg zu gehen, für weitere Arbeit in Klang Abstrakt geändert wurde.

... strong and confident ... (Grinding into emptiness)

This is the debut CD from Berlin-based Klang Abstrakt. It's credited as Klangwerk, though: they recently underwent a name change which reflects their infancy. This is a strong and confident disk, which was independently released and distributed by the band itself, Riccardo Zimmermann and Diana Leonhardt.
The two versions of the title track really aren't very different from one another. The "Romantic" version is simply missing the drum machine, and after hearing the "Drumatic" version that opens the disk it seems like something is missing - the sound just seems less full.
The song is fairly simple but really well executed. There are fast-paced, delayed synth melodies that come and go in repetitive, layered waves. Deeper drones add substance to the low end while these melodies lightly weave their way through the song in an almost frantic manner. It's very relaxing and easy to listen to, yet it has
a very subtile, engaging intensity.
"The Journey" is quite a change in pace - it's more
rhythmic as opposed to melodic. There is a constant beat that sounds like someone tapping out Morse code on a wire. Deeper plunking sounds match this beat at a slower rate. The heavy synth drones are short and in time with the beat, and a dark chorus of melancholic voices add a symphonic finishing though. Although this is a good note to end on the disk is far too short. It mainly served as a teaser preceding their recently released full length LP "Beam".

Klangwerk... ein Name, den es so schon nicht mehr gibt. Heute formieren die Berliner Riccardo Zimmermann und Diana Leonhardt unter dem Namen "Klang ABSTRAKT". Und unter diesem Titel stellen sie eigentlich einen ganz eigenen Musikstil vor. Auf dieser Maxi befinden sich besonders treibende und melodische Ausschnitte aus dem "Klang ABSTRAKT"-Spektrum. "Memories" ist ein wunderbares Stück, das die empfängliche Seele zum Schwelgen einlädt.
Den Song findet man auf der Maxi in zwei Versionen. Die drumatic-Version ist mit Schlagzeug untermahlt, während die romantic-Version noch seichter daherkommt und den Zuhörer noch unterschwelliger in die "Klang ABSTRAKT"-Sphäre entführt.
Bei "The journey" zeigen "Klang ABSTRAKT" einmal mehr, daß sie fähig sind, ihre Songs sehr filigran aufzubauen. Der Zuhörer gleitet hier geradezu in eine neue klangliche Umgebung, die sich nach und nach aufbaut. Unterstützt durch chorale Gesänge, entsteht schnell eine Gänsehaut - Musik zum Fühlen.

Klang Abstrakt ein Projekt von Riccardo Zimmermann bekannt aus dem Terminal Choice Umfeld überraschte mich total. Die Maxi Memories, die aus 2 Versionen des Titeltracks und dem Stück The Journey besteht, glänzt vor genialen Einfällen. Der Sound der stellenweisen an Will oder Doubting Thomas erinnert ist genial. Ein sicherer Tip um die Tanzflächen voll zu kriegen und die Leute fragend am DJ Pult stehen zu lassen. Schreit einfach nach mehr davon.

Klang Abstrakt heißen hier noch Klangwerk, ein Name, den sie aus rechtlichen Gründen abgelegt haben. Auf der MCD findet sich eine recht tanzbare "drumatic"-Version von Memories, sowie die originale "romantic"-Version, die auch auf dem Album enthalten ist. "Memories" ist ein ziemlich atmosphärisches Stück mit eigenem Reiz und wird all jenen gefallen, denen auch "Thorns" von :w: oder L'ame immortelle gefällt - wie beispielsweise mir... Als Bonus gibt es noch das sehr dunkle und ruhige Stück "The journey". Ich wage zu behaupten, daß mit ein bißchen Promotion die "Drumatic"-version von Memories ein kleiner Clubhit werden könnte... mal schauen.

... Lust auf mehr ... (Puritan)

Was hier an meine sonst so lärmgewohnten Ohren klingt, ist eigentlich nicht so abstrakt. Eher sehr gut und intelligent gemachter Electro. Die Maxi bietet 3 Tracks, wobei Memories mit zwei Versionen vertreten ist, zum einen als drumatic Version, welche rhythmisch sehr zu hören ist und zum zweiten eine romantische Version, welche ohne drums auskommt und sehr orchestral wirkt und wohl jedes Düsterherz höher schlagen lässt. Der dritte Song The Journey ist ien exclusiver Track und nur auf der Maxi zu finden. Für mich der wohl schönste Track. Er baut sich langsam auf und verliert dabei jedoch nie seine Intensität und Schönheit. Klang Abstrakt haben mit Memories eine der wohl schönsten und romantischsten MCD abgeliefert und macht auf jeden Fall Lust auf mehr. Dass Klang Abstrakt noch bei keinem großen Label sind, bleibt mir hier unverständlich. Diese MCD kann ich aber ohne Zweifel jedem Fan düsterer und romantischer Musik empfehlen. Besorgt sie euch, sonst könntet Ihr es wirklich bereuen.

This Berlin-based duo's debut release presents two similar mixes of 'Memories'--an instrumental neo-symphonic electronic track with a slight air of tension and foreboding. The non-LP track, 'The Journey', is a more minimal rhythmic track that seems to hover rather inobtrusively through the air before it dissipates. Fine, but somewhat insubstantial for a single.

Klang Abstrakt is a Berlin based duo lead by Ricardo Zimmermann, a former member of Terminal Choice. "Memories" is the band's debut single, and it shows that we're not talking at all about Terminal Choice here.
Memories is a romantic track, based on synthetic strings and electronic percussions. The melodie flow nicely, and is supported by a catchy drumming. The atmosphere is soft, and quite typical of german dark wave. This is a nice track, even though the recording is not as good as it could be. The "romantic" remix differs from the "drumatic" one in the fact that it has no drums, and that the violins are slightly faster. "The journey" is a more rhythmic track, with a soft but persistant tribal drumming.
"Memories" is, all in all, a nice debut in the form of a harmless and soft dark wave single.

Memories is a CD single to go along with Beam, the full length album from composer Riccardo Zimmermann and singer/artist Diana Leonhardt. Two versions of Memories, one (drumatic), the other (romantic) plus another song the Journey. The variance in this remix is difficult to name, except that the drumatic is slightly more dancey than the romantic. Both smack of tubular bells and Giallo horror films, complete with low-level gregorian chants behind the place where Ms. Leonhardt is missing, sorely.
I´m not sure, but I suspect that mixing really bland Techno-drum-machining with really bland Catholicish choiring is a bad idea, but they did it anyway, on the Journey, for almost five minutes. And Diana still isn´t singing. Apparently she did do the cover artwork, so that´s something; still can´t shake the feeling that these people have more to offer than they are letting on. There is far too much slick production here, with banal results that seem a shame, when someone obviously has a lot of great gear, and plenty of spare time.
